Facebook has announced that Facebook Messenger is now a separate website. It is move that can help users to use Facebook Messenger as IM, like the mobile application. Without getting distracted by the ever annoying News Feed. The latest announcement makes it a bit more clear that Facebook intends to make Messenger more powerful.
Ever since Facebook acquired WhatsApp sometime back. There have been multiple launches and announcements for both Facebook as well as WhatsApp. And all of them were either meant to promote Messenger as a powerful standalone app or integrate it with WhatsApp for a seamless experience. Facebook Messenger was made a compulsory download in case you wished to chat with your friends through mobile. A payment system was introduced on Messenger, a web version of WhatsApp was launched, and all these happened in the last eighteen months or so.
The website looks like a blown-up version of the mobile application. There are three columns, the conversation threads to the left, your current conversation on the middle, and information regarding the person(s) you are chatting with is shown on the right with option to mute notifications.
Since it’s meant to be a standalone IM website, all the options available on Facebook are already present. There is an option to add people to current conversation. Start voice call, start video call and a switch for information panel, on the top right corner. Settings and New Message options are available on top of the left column.
The website is currently available in English, with support for multiple languages expected soon.
